Insufficiency fractures are a type of stress fracture, which are the result of normal stresses on abnormal bone.. They should not be confused with fatigue fractures which are due to abnormal stresses on normal bone, or with pathological fractures, the result of diseased, weakened bone due to focal pathology such as tumours (both malignant and benign).

Sacral insufficiency fractures (SIFs) are a subtype of stress fractures, resulting from normal stress applied to a bone with reduced elasticity. Typically, SIFs are associated with an underlying metabolic bone disease condition such as osteoporosis or Paget's disease and are most common in elderly women. sacral insufficiency fractures are a fragility fracture that occurs more commonly in elderly women treatment is usually observation, with operative treatment reserved for those who fail nonoperative treatment; Epidemiology incidence 1% of women > 55 years old. increases with age As the name suggests, sacral insufficiency fractures occur when the quality of the sacral bone has become insufficient to handle the stress of weight bearing. The bone has lost some of its supporting structure and has become weak. Since this is usually because of osteoporosis, sacral insufficiency fractures occur most often in older women.

Insufficiency fracture sacrum

Sacral insufficiency fractures are a subtype of stress fractures, which are the result of normal stresses on abnormal bone, most frequently seen in the setting of osteoporosis. They fall under the broader group of pelvic insufficiency fractures.

Patients with SCI are at higher risk of immobility and osteoporosis, and hence mobilizing the patient, weight-bearing exercises, physiotherapy and pharmacological management of osteoporosis are crucial in the management of SIFs. Insufficiency fractures are a type of stress fracture, which are the result of normal stresses on abnormal bone.

The fracture can just simply happen when the bone becomes too weak to handle the stress of weight bearing. When the sacrum is fractured, 60 per cent of the time the bone in front of the pelvis will also fracture. Sacral insufficiency fractures are pathologic fractures that occur in patients with abnormal bone quality. These injuries occur after low-energy trauma or repetitive physiologic loads.

Insufficiency fracture sacrum

Insufficiency fractures of the sacrum are rarely diagnosed. These fractures occur majorly in a vertical pattern, parallel to the sacroiliac joint and in line with axial load vectors. As the load continues, the sacral body may give way to a transverse fracture, leading to further instability [5,6]. Etiology

While the true incidence is difficult to quantify, they are being increasingly recognized as a source of low back pain in the elderly population. A sacral insufficiency fracture may occur in such a setting, and is an important and not rare finding, particularly in elderly women.
